Home Film School: Learning why Color is so important for the Tone of a Movie_Film.

I cannot explain how illuminating (get, it lol, bad joke) knowing about color in film and especially what they represent in films of Stanley Kubricks level and Wes Anderson.

Home film school is a must. Its helping to understand my film language and hopefully help any burgeoning Director/Edit/Set Designer young in the game to get a head start over color theory that will take us far.

Story Binder explains how Stanley Kubrick uses Color to enhance the visual storytelling.

Here are a few shots I took of the lesson. https://youtu.be/yVdhm9P8I6o

Finding Color in Mis en Scene; there are "four" area's;

  1. Sets & Location

  2. Props

  3. Costume

  4. Hair/Make up/Lighting

It might dominate a scene or accompany the scene.

RED denotes Danger. In moments where threat or danger is imminent. Scenes of emotional intensity.

PURPLE: Temptation & Seduction, "Prince just came to my mind" :).

GREEN: "Kubrick uses Green as a 'natural color' as symbols for life and death".

BLUE: "Blue as exaggerated moonlight or Cold, Sin and Guilt".

YELLOW/GOLD: "Opulent and Grandiosity" "Or a way to Isolate the character from the background" (Story Binder).

BLUE: "Blue as exaggerated moonlight or Cold, Sin and Guilt"

WHITE: “Kubrick often uses White for Contrast, either to allow other colors to ‘Pop’ Or to complicate our associations with white”.
